Noel Watson first
started playing the drums in 1980, taking lessons in school on the
snare drum for a short period that ended when his drum teacher foolishly
admitted that he'd never heard of Deep Purple, Motorhead or The Ramones.
Undeterred, he soon started jamming and recording songs with his friends
from the band the Plaster Casters during school lunchbreaks. Several
years later after getting his first drumkit at 16, he quickly joined
Los Bastardos, a school band that jammed Led Zeppelin and original
songs every Saturday in various garages of north Cardiff. Other musical
projects at this time included Anus, a spoof grindcore band and several
Spacemen 3 influenced indie bands.
Following gigs in school and with local jazz trio The Paul Hampson
Express, at 19 he went to university where he played with various
blues, jazz and polka bands in and around Southampton. After an inspirational
interview with U.S. hardcore/metal band Corrosion of Conformity for
the college music pages he decided to seriously concentrate on music
and headed back to Cardiff.
After joining punk/funk band Hamble and acid-rockers Exis for a while
an old friend from Los Bastardos asked him to play with pop band Insides
who were signed to 4AD records. Encouraged by this and interested
by the new jungle/drum & bass music coming out of London he moved
to the capital and enrolled at drum school for a year, studying with
Brazilian percussionist Bosco d'Oliveira amongst others.
Since then he has recorded albums and played live with Winelight (noise
rock), Grizzly (new country featuring members of the Sparks, Quint
(post-rock improv), Snipper (indie), Krakatoa (stoner rock, toured
with Queens of the Stone Age), Woking/Surrey Philharmonic Orchestra
(on orchestral percussion), Carleen Anderson/Neon Phusion (breakbeat/nu-jazz
fusion), Peter Boam (ex Pulp), Insides (4AD), Harris-Whelan Big Band,
Fabulous Fug Band (soul-funk), Russ Gabriel (Brazilian/techno), Flaky
Jake and the Steamin' Locos (cajun/tex mex), The Electric Lady Band
(fun Hendrix tribute) as well as many others he can't remember. He
has also recorded for BBC Radio, R&S, Flying Fish, Sony, Double Plus
and Emoticon records.
Fascinated by breakbeat/jungle//broken beat rhythms, he has been writing
a drummer's tutorial book on this subject for the last five years.
Hopefully it will be finished in time for publication sometime next
year. Currently, he is working on his first LP, a mix of old skool
jungle, latin, breaks and broken beats in the style of Cal Tjader/Squarepusher.
